June 3, 1953 – May 1, 2026
Mike (known to many as “H”), 72, died unexpectedly and suddenly of a health event on May 1, 2026, at his home in Silver Bay, Minnesota. We are grateful that he did not suffer.
Mike was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, and grew up in White Bear Lake, Minnesota. He moved to Silver Bay, Minnesota, where he taught in the Lake Superior School District for 30 years. He was known for his generosity, fun loving spirit, humor, kindness, honesty, curiosity, environmentalism, musical skills, empathy, and intelligence. He was well loved by so many, and his loss is heartbreaking.
He is survived by his many friends and his siblings: Roxanne Chmielewski, Sherrie Wiegand (Otto), Deb Casper, Julie Casper (Bruce), Gary Casper, Peter Casper (Aoy) and Becky Casper. And also by his beloved cat, Sam, who now has a new home with lots of love. He is also survived by his many Nieces and Nephews.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert and Marlene Casper.
He was a lifelong learner and teacher and found purpose in the natural environment, music, and close friendships. He was an avid angler, reader, collector of books and comics, and a wonderful musician. He was in several bands throughout his life. His beautiful voice and guitar playing are known to many.
A Celebration of Life with food will be held on Friday, June 26, at the Finland Community Center near Silver Bay from 3 – 7 PM.
A second Celebration of Life with snacks and NA beverages will be held at the Casey Lake Pavilion in North St. Paul on Thursday, July 9th, from 3 -7 PM.
In keeping with Mike’s love of the environment, the family encourages a donation in his memory to the Save The Boundary Waters organization in Ely, MN. There will be an envelope and information available.
