GRAND MARAIS, MN — Minnesota’s forests provide sustainable gifts that can be responsibly harvested, most notably maple syrup. To help residents connect with this seasonal tradition, the University of Minnesota Extension is offering a “Maple Sugaring for Beginners” workshop in Cook County on Thursday, March 26, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The workshop will cover the history of maple sugaring in the region, the biological process of sap production, harvesting techniques, and best practices for maintaining tree health. Participants will learn how to turn raw sap into finished syrup and tour a homestead-scale sugarbush. The tour features local sugarmakers who have stewarded their trees for 40 years, offering a unique opportunity to learn from decades of experience.
The program begins at the Cook County Community Center (317 W 5th St, Grand Marais) with an introductory classroom presentation. Following the presentation, the group will travel in their own vehicles to a nearby sugarbush for the outdoor tour. The program will conclude at the sugarbush site.
“Learning to harvest maple sap and make syrup is an approachable hobby and a great way to connect with the land,” said Extension Educator Sarah Waddle. “I encourage anyone interested to attend and learn how to make this tradition part of your year.”
While designed for beginners, sugarmakers of all experience levels are welcome to attend.
