Girls Varsity Basketball

The Mariners fell 62-49 to Cherry on January 26 but answered with a strong 67-64 win over LittleforkBig Falls on January 30. They opened a three-game road stretch this week with Carlton/Wrenshall on February 3, followed by Floodwood on February 5 and East Central on February 6.

The Agates took a tough 58-20 loss to Cromwell-Wright on January 27. The Cardinals are 12-5 overall. Two Harbors then dropped a 63-30 home game to Esko on January 29. Esko is 6-13, and the Agates are 4-13. Two Harbors hosted Barnum on February 5 and stays home for Pierz on February 6. Varsity starts at 7 PM.

Boys Varsity Basketball

The Vikings kept their momentum going on January 27 with an 85- 49 home win over Fond du Lac Ojibwe. Barnum broke the streak a few days later with a 68-52 result on the Bombers’ court. Cook County is now 11-5. The Vikings hosted North Woods on February 3 and return home February 5 for Hill City/Northland and February 6 for Cromwell-Wright.

The Agates earned a 67-52 win over Cromwell-Wright on January 27. Senior Captain Jace Gomez passed 1000 career points in the victory. Two Harbors stayed hot on January 30 with a 51-44 win over Esko. The Agates entered their February 3 matchup with Aitkin at 13-5 and head to Barnum on February 6.

Mite Hockey

The Two Harbors Mite 2 Gray and Maroon hockey teams had a blast at their Woodland Jamboree from January 30 through February 1. The annual Jamboree was sponsored by Park State Bank and is held outdoors. There were a whopping 36 teams taking part from around the area. 

Players and families enjoyed a slew of half-ice games, warm fires around the rink, food, raffles, a silent auction, and a visit from the UMD Bulldogs’ mascot Champ.

Boys Varsity Hockey

The North Shore Storm boys hockey team traveled to Coleraine on January 29 to take on Greenway. Greenway scored the first 4 goals of the game before senior Joshua Maxwell put the Storm on the board in the 2nd on an even-strength goal assisted by junior Levi Lovely. Maxwell added another in the 3rd with senior Isaiah Bertin assisting, but the early deficit held.

Greenway fired 55 shots on sophomore goalie Dax Krech, who stopped 50. The Storm finished with 13 shots on goal. On February 2, the boys headed to Moose Lake, where the game stayed scoreless until early in the 3rd when Bertin capitalized on a power play with Lovely assisting. On their next power play, sophomore Vaughn Christensen scored with senior Josh Johnson and Maxwell assisting. Moose Lake scored once in the 3rd, but the Storm held on for a 2-1 win. Krech faced 38 shots, while Moose Lake recorded 29 saves.

The boys return home on February 6 to host Park Rapids at Rukavina Arena, then travel to International Falls the next day for a matchup at Bronco Arena.

Girls Varsity Hockey

The Storm girls are back on a winning streak after three straight victories, starting with a 6-5 win over Rock Ridge on January 26.

Rock Ridge scored first, but Raegen Hogenson answered with help from Guilia McGiffert and Hallie Komarek. Rock Ridge added another before the first period ended. Reese Costley tied it early in the 2nd with Berkley Hoff and Hayden Bright assisting, but Rock Ridge regained the lead 10 seconds later. Thirteen seconds after that, Lola Lundgren tied it on a power play with Costley and Bright assisting, only for Rock Ridge to score again 13 seconds later. Four goals in under 40 seconds kept the game wild.

Costley tied it midway through the period on a power play with Hogenson and Bright assisting, and Ella Peterson gave the Storm their first lead with Bright and Costley assisting. Rock Ridge tied it in the 3rd, but Bright scored the game-winner with Peterson and Hoff assisting. Shots were even at 41 each, and Emmy Bentler held strong in the net.

The next day the girls defeated Cloquet/Esko/Carlton 7-3. CEC scored first, but Komarek tied it with Anna Klemmer assisting. Costley scored 1 minute into the 2nd with Bright and Hogenson assisting. Lilly Ernest extended the lead with Costley and Hogenson helping out before Costley made it 4-1 with Audrie Ernest on the assist. CEC cut it to 4-2, but Komarek answered 11 seconds later with help from Hoff and Stella LaPointe.

Bright scored next with Costley and A. Ernest assisting, and Hoff added another before the period ended with Komarek and McGiffert assisting. CEC scored once in the 3rd for a final of 7-3. Bentler faced 31 shots while the Storm put 30 on the CEC goalie.

On January 29, the girls shut out Moose Lake 4-0. After a scoreless 1st, Bright opened scoring on a power play with Hoff and McGiffert assisting. Hoff scored next with Lilly Ernest assisting. In the 3rd, Costley scored with Lundgren on the assist, and Hogenson added another with Hoff and Bright’s help on the play. Bentler earned the shutout with 22 saves, and the Storm offense generated 40 shots on goal.

The girls now look toward their Class 1A Section 7 Semifinal on February 7 at St. Luke’s Arena. Their opponent is still to be determined.
