Still Missing -Gene Doherty’s Car Found in Cook County

On Friday, July 11, 2025, the Cook County Sheriff’s office notified the public that an abandoned vehicle had been found in the vicinity of the Grade and Brule Lake Road in Cook County. The location is a rugged, remote, and heavily forested area within the Superior National Forest. The car belongs to missing person Gene Adam Doherty. Doherty was reported missing to the Lake County Sheriff’s office on July 2.

According to Cook County Chief Deputy Leif Lunde, search and rescue operations to find Doherty began immediately in conjunction with the United States Forest Service (USFS) and St. Louis County Search and Rescue. As of Monday, July 14, the search is still ongoing using the resources of the Cook County Sheriff’s office, Cook County Search and Rescue, and USFS personnel.

Doherty, 40 years old, was last seen leaving his mother’s house near Silver Bay on July 1. The Lake County Sheriff’s office reported on July 10 that Mr. Doherty may be in the throes of a mental health crisis.

The Cook County Sheriff’s office requests that anyone who has information on the whereabouts of Mr. Doherty to call 218-387-3030.

This is an ongoing story and has been updated as needed until our deadline.
