There were unfamiliar vans from Kansas driving in Two Harbors the week of June 24-29. No it wasn’t Dorthy and Toto or the wicked witch of the west. The vans weren’t loaded with tourists, but workers. Thirty-five youth and mentors from Baxter Springs Kansas and the surrounding area would transform seven houses in town that week. Through a joint effort of Community Partners and Western Lake Superior Habitat For Humanity, located in Duluth, the group would replace broken boards in decks, scrape and paint foundations, install insulation, remove and replace broken concrete walks, demolish and remove old decks, build new decks and stairs and install handrails. All making for safe entrance and exit from homes of older Two Harborites. These improvements would mean that the homeowners will be safer and would maintain their independence. All of this was possible through the coordination of Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Superior who housed these folks, the Superior YMCA for showers, the City of Two Harbors who would allow the workers to shower at the campground, and Emmanuel and Bethlehem Luthern Churches here in Two Harbors who provided lunches each day. North Shore Lumber was able to provide and deliver the materials needed to complete those projects that are still ongoing. A big round of applause for all those involved and a hope that this is a start of an ongoing service to the residents of Two Harbors.
