To the Editor:
A daily email comes to my inbox from The Collapse Chronicle, “Documenting the ongoing climate crisis, mass extinctions, and decline and fall of late stage capitalism.” It is comprised of headlines and links to stories from a wide variety of media sources.
A sampling of just a few of the headlines from the April 10 email demonstrates how the current administration is intensifying the collapse-in-progress:
“White House ends funding for key US climate body: ‘No coming back from this’” – The Guardian
“Trump Administration Cuts Princeton Funding to Study Climate Change, Claiming It Creates ‘Climate Anxiety’” – New York Times
“Trump takes aim at city and state climate laws in executive order” – The Guardian
“New Trump Orders Aim to Keep Coal Power Alive, Despite Climate and Economic Costs” – Inside Climate News
“America Is Backsliding Toward Its Most Polluted Era” – The Atlantic
I’ve chosen only well-known media sources as examples (there are also many lesser known and Substack essays) and by no means do they all target a political entity or even only one country. This is a nonpartisan and global phenomenon. But at this critical time in the human story, I wish the USA could be a leader in the global effort to mitigate suffering instead of prioritizing actions which will only serve to aggravate and intensify it.
