Flintlock Range Association Hosts First Swap Meet – Sunday, May 18

The Flintlock Range Association is holding the first of what will be an annual swap meet at the Cook County Community Center, 317 W 5th St. in Grand Marais on Sunday, May 18. The public is welcome and the meet is open from 11 am to 3 pm.

The swap meet provides an opportunity for individuals to buy or sell used hunting, fishing, trapping, and reloading equipment, as well as outdoor gear such as canoes, boats, motors, and apparel.

The event supports the Flintlock Range Association’s efforts to establish Cook County’s first shooting and archery range. Current members of Flintlock will be there to share updates, answer questions, and invite the public to get involved. The event offers door prizes and an opportunity for attendees to come together before the summer season begins to swap some stories about your time in the woods, clean out your garage, and make a few bucks.

During the Swap Meet, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officers, based in the Arrowhead region, will be at the event and available to the public for informational and educational purposes. Anyone interested in reserving a table to sell new or used gear can contact Flintlock Range Association at flintlockrange@gmail.com.

The Flintlock Range Association is dedicated to providing a safe, comprehensive, and educational shooting and archery range in Cook County that caters to individuals and law enforcement officials seeking to enhance their firearms proficiency and practice responsible gun ownership. One of the Flintlock Range Association’s goals is to develop a high school trap and skeet shooting league in Cook County.

Flintlock broke ground on a 360-acre parcel located along Forest Service Road 304, approximately 9 miles up the Gunflint Trail, in October 2024. Construction of the range will continue throughout the Summer of 2025. Construction of the pistol and rifle shooting lanes will be finished this fall. Once that work is finished, Flintlock plans to host a ribbon-cutting on site that is open to the public.

Typically these “about me” pages include a list of academic achievements (I have none) and positions held (I have had many, but who really cares about those?) So, in the words of the late Admiral James Stockwell, “Who am I? Why am I here?” I’m well into my seventh decade on this blue planet we call home. I’m a pretty successful husband, father, and grandfather, at least in my humble opinion. My progeny may disagree. We have four children and five grandchildren. I spent most of my professional life in the freight business. At the tender age of 40, early retirement beckoned and we moved to Grand Marais. A year after we got here, we bought and operated the Cook County News Herald, a weekly newspaper in Grand Marais. A sharp learning curve for a dumb freight broker to become a newspaper editor and publisher. By 1999 the News Herald was an acquisition target for a rapidly consolidating media market. We sold our businesses and “retired” again, buying a winter retreat in Nevada. In the fall of 2016, we returned to Grand Marais and bought a house from old friends of ours on the ridge overlooking Lake Superior. They were able to move closer to family and their Mexico winter home. And we came home to what we say is our last house. I’m a strong believer in the value of local newspapers--both online and those you can wrap a fish in. I write a weekly column and a couple of feature stories for the Northshore Journal. I’m most interested in writing about the everyday lives of local people and reporting on issues of importance to them.
