A friendly rivalry between the Agates and Mariners volleyball teams adds extra excitement to the regular season, showcased by a cherished tradition. Each year, the Two Harbors and Silver Bay teams battle for possession of a large wooden oar emblazoned with the words “WAR FOR THE OAR.” In 2023, Two Harbors had the honor of keeping the oar close to their home shore, and after their Thursday, August 29th game, it seems they intend to hold onto it for another season.
The season opener, dubbed “Volleyball Youth Night,” was a celebration of young athletes passionate about the sport. Many of the kids had participated in a Community Volleyball Clinic held in the weeks leading up to the game. A highlight of the evening was the opportunity for the children to stand with the athletes during the national anthem.
With the two North Shore teams squaring off for the first game of the season, the Two Harbors High School gymnasium buzzed with energy.
“It was a really great way to start our season, and we couldn’t have picked a better team to go up against! It’s been a while since we’ve had that much excitement in our gym, and I think everyone was just as thrilled to be there as we were,” shared Coach Carley Challender, who co-heads the team with Coach Ashley Paulson.
The Agates took control early, winning the first two sets with identical scores of 25-16. “Our first two games were huge for us, and I think they instilled some confidence in our girls, shaking off the nerves of the season opener,” said Coach Challender.
The Mariners, however, rallied in the third set, with both teams exchanging points in a thrilling battle. In the end, the Agates secured the win with a narrow 25-23 victory.
It was a standout night for Two Harbors senior outside hitter Rachel Bopp, who recorded 16 kills. Fellow senior Addison Bentler contributed 3 aces, while junior Delaney Nelson impressed with 32 successful digs.
The opening performance provided valuable insights into the team’s strengths and areas for improvement.
“It showed us what we need to work on and adjust moving forward,” Coach Challender reflected. “We’re eager to face the Mariners again later this season!”
Looking ahead, the Agates will celebrate Senior Night on September 12th, honoring their three seniors: Rachel Bopp, Addison Bentler, and Lauren Pinnell. The event will also highlight the athletes’ future plans, with the players recognizing a teacher or influential person from the Two Harbors area who has made a significant impact on their lives.
