Veterans with qualifying dependents—such as a spouse, child, or in some cases a parent—may receive additional monthly compensation on top of their base disability benefit. But with that added benefit comes a responsibility: keeping VA informed of any changes in your dependent status.
VA conducts a dependency verification process. They reach out to Veterans asking for confirmation of their current dependents, typically as a mailed form. Think of it as VA’s way of making sure the records match reality.
Why does this matter? Because if the records don’t line up—whether due to a missed update or an unanswered verification request—it can affect your benefit payments.
Reporting Life Changes Promptly If a dependent passes away, or if there is a divorce, it is critical to notify VA immediately. Continuing to receive benefits for someone no longer eligible will create an “overpayment.” Overpayments must be repaid—even if the mistake was unintentional.
On the flip side, adding a new dependent (such as a spouse after marriage or a child) should also be reported promptly. VA can adjust your payment upward to reflect the change, and you won’t miss out on your entitled benefits.
Responding to VA’s Verification Requests Don’t ignore VA requests for dependency verification. If no response is received by the deadline, VA may automatically remove dependents from your award. That means your monthly payment could suddenly drop because the verification wasn’t returned.
If you miss a deadline, you can usually restore the benefit by responding and providing the requested information. However, there may be a gap in payment.
How to Update or Verify Dependents
- Online: Log in to VA.gov, where you can add or remove dependents electronically.
- Phone: Call VA benefits hotline at (800) 827-1000.
- By Mail: Complete and send applicable form.
- With Help: Contact your CVSO for guidance.
