The 2025 Two Harbors High School Girls’ Golf Season Recap

Submitted by Kristi Wasko

The 2025 Two Harbors High School (THHS) girls’ golf season was a true success story—especially following a modified 2024 season with just a handful of individual participants. Without a formal girls team in recent years, a small group of girls took the initiative last spring to practice, learn the rules, and compete in a few fun meets to prepare for this year. That hard work paid off. This season, ten dedicated athletes came out to represent THHS in the East Range/Iron Range Conference and were coached by Kristi Was-ko and assistant Hannah Martin.

Spring weather in northern Minnesota can be unpredictable, and this year was no exception. The Lady Agates began their season indoors—stretching, reviewing rules, watching swing technique videos, and putting on carpet in the high school. Once the snow cleared, they moved outside to the practice soccer field, working on chipping and full swings. In fact, the team began competing in meets before Lakeview National Golf Course was even open for practice. Despite these challenges, the girls pushed through a wide range of weather conditions and played some difficult courses as a mostly inexperienced team—and found success.

The team participated in six conference meets and four invitationals, both individually and as a group. Their top team finishes came at Vermillion Fairways in Cook and in Virginia, where the Agates took second place out of six teams.

Season highlights included Emmy Bentler earning All-Conference honors as an individual golfer, and both Emmy and Isabelle Mecklin qualifying for the Section tournament at The Quarry in Biwabik. The team now has its sights set on qualifying for Sections next year as a group and continuing to grow and improve.

Congratulations to the Lady Agates on an outstanding sea-son!

The THHS girls’ golf team would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Two Harbors Federal Credit Union for donating quarterzips after learning that the team did not have uniforms last year. Their generosity means a great deal and the girls looked sharp during their  meets this year. We’re also incredibly grateful to Lakeview National Golf Course. Jim McDannold, Ian, Elijah, Zach, and the rest of the Lakeview team have consistently gone above and beyond to support our high school athletes. Thanks to their encouragement and the welcoming attitude of course members, our players have a place to practice and grow their game. Your support makes all the difference, and we truly appreciate it.
