Silver Bay City Council: The Year In Review

On Monday night, the Silver Bay City Council took the opportunity to review work that has been done over the course of this past year. Elected officials and City staff have compiled an impressive list of accomplishments in their efforts to address needs that will help keep the city of Silver Bay going and growing. Some of the projects are ongoing but they each bring significant upgrades to city facilities and to the quality of life for area residents.

The East Lakeview Drive project, which improves accessibility to Black Beach Park, was completed over the summer. The library staff recently held a grand reopening at the completion of the Library Addition and Roofing project. The Reunion Hall has had a new air conditioning / ventilation system and wifi installed. Renovations have been made to the Golf Course, including a new deck, improved outdoor seating, improvements to the golf cart parking area, and an upgrade to the building entrance making it handicapped accessible. Security cameras and wifi improvements have been installed at the Mary Mac Center. Ongoing projects include improvements to the Outdoor Recreation Park, upgrades to the Water Treatment facility, continued work on developing the Penn Boulevard and Silverpoint II housing projects, and continued work to move the Citywide Street Improvement Program, the Lake County CSAH 32 Project and the Multi-Modal Trailhead Center, forward.

The Council voted to adopt the city budget and the levy for fiscal year 2025. Those documents will be available for perusal at City Hall.

A date was set for a public hearing concerning the licensing and operating regulations for cannabis business in the city. That meeting will be held on January 6th at 7:00 PM.

The Council recognized the contributions that Dustin Goutermont has made to the city over the past 12 years as a member of the City Council and as a member of a number of Boards and Commissions. In that time, Goutermont has been instrumental in working to develop the City’s Comprehensive Plan. He has been a part in the Black Beach Park and Campground projects, the Boathouse Bay development and the Vision Plans for both Bayview Park and the downtown development. In addition, he volunteers for the Youth Hockey and sports programs and serves on the Board of Lovin’ Lake County. Though he is stepping down from his official capacity as a member of the Council, he will undoubtedly continue to work for the betterment of the Silver Bay community.

The next Silver Bay Council meeting is scheduled for January 6th at 7:00 PM.

My wife, Marsha Kinzer (a proud DEHS Greyhound, class of ‘77) introduced me to the North Shore on vacation in 2012. It became our regular escape when the stress of our careers in education became overwhelming, and it didn’t take me long to fall in love with the breathtaking scenery, the nice people, and “salad” containing Jell-o and marshmallows. So you can either blame or thank my loving wife for my being here, because when we needed to choose a retirement hometown, Marsha advocated hard for her beloved Duluth, and here we are, six months later. Yes, this will be my first northern Minnesota winter. Yes, I welcome thoughts and prayers. Government, public policy, and social justice weighed heavily in the curriculums I taught at the high school level over a thirty-eight year career. In addition, we were a laboratory school focused on critical thinking in conjunction with technical and scientific writing. So when I found myself adrift on the great ocean of retirement and spied a raft, I jumped at the chance to take up what I’d left behind…minus the bad teachers’ lounge coffee. My position at the NSJ allows me to combine my passions for government and writing, and it’s helping me to feel less out of touch in new surroundings. When I’m not being “Cubby” (Marsha’s favorite new nickname for this green reporter) I enjoy pointing at eagles and saying, “Look, honey. There’s an eagle.” I’ve had an active side hustle as a professional musician for almost as many years as Charlie Parr. As a guitarist/singer/songwriter, I graced the stages of clubs and festivals around southern Wisconsin, including an appearance on A Prairie Home Companion. Should I even mention A Prairie Home Companion, or am I the only one here old enough to remember what that is? Look! An eagle!
