Rain may Remain Elusive this May

I got my first job at the age of ten delivering the Mesabi Daily News in Ely. Eight years later, I was driving a motor route for the paper. That would take me weaving down twisty old Highway 1 towards Isabella where you could start getting a hint of North Shore air breezing inland. Walking or driving a daily route was at least vaguely similar to what our hard working letter carriers do. USPS workers, of course, are famous for tromping through every style of weather we have in the Northland. That can vary through all the seasons here in a single day: winter temperatures in the early morning, spring temps in the late morning, summer’s heat in the afternoon and fall’s chill in the evening. They also march through sun, rain and snow.

This May, they may not have much rain to contend with but a fair amount of warmth could come to call. This May, we are expecting an inch less than normal rain. Of course, that may be a good thing in one way because last spring’s bugs were terrible! Unfortunately, dry conditions would egg on the already high fire danger.

Along with low rain, May could go up to three degrees above normal. May 1st to the 11th should have some rain showers and the period will start cooler than normal and then head to normal. The 12th to 21st should be sunny, dry and warm. The 27th to 31st should cool a bit and kick up a couple of rain showers. There are signs that June will really dry up and we’ll have details on that coming up next month.
