On March 15th and 16th, 35 youth from the Minnesota Academy of Tumbling traveled to Waverly, Iowa for a tumbling competition. Some youth competed only on one day, but others competed the entire weekend in tumbling and double mini, which is a form of vault and trampoline.
Out of the 35 competitors, eight finished first in various events. Representing Cloquet, Emree Dockendorf and Eleanor Ojanen finished first in tumbling, Coralyn Gustafson, Isaac Olson, and Paige Dockendorf in double mini, and Macie Cornelison in tumbling and double mini. Representing Duluth, Alex Chartier finished first in tumbling, and representing Two Harbors, Ellie Mae Koster finished first in tumbling.
The Minnesota Academy of Tumbling offers classes in Beaver Bay, Two Harbors, Proctor, Hermantown, and Cloquet, with the main gym located in Cloquet. Founded two years ago, the academy began by traveling and renting space in different schools and community centers. After one year, the academy saw such significant growth that the Cloquet gym was added as a permanent home gym. Over 50 students take classes in Two Harbors and Beaver Bay alone, and 13 of these students are on the competitive team.
Classes are offered for ages 18 months through adults, and include ninja classes and recreational cheer. The owner and head coach, Brittany Hammond, has coached tumbling for 34 years across the United States.
