Though I managed to snag the last ticket available (#750) for the Pequaywan Area Trailblazers and Voyager Snowmobile Club raffle just minutes before the drawing, my luck didn’t stretch far enough to score the big prize. I was looking forward to a shiny new ATV to replace my poor four-wheeler that folks may have heard limping its way to the Hugo’s Bar Annual Pig Roast and Bean Bag Tournament.
It was a picture-perfect day in Brimson, sunny with just the right kind of breeze to keep things comfortable. Earlier, the Brimson Market at Hugo’s was in full swing, offering a mix of vendors with the lively tunes of the North Shore Fiddlers drifting through the air.
Later in the afternoon, Ron E. Cash took the mic, singing classic country songs made famous by Johnny Cash and other music legends. His performance brought a nostalgic feel to the day, weaving familiar tunes into the lively atmosphere.
As my friend and I dug into plates piled high with pork, potato salad, corn, and possibly the best baked beans I’ve ever tasted, we enjoyed the music and conversation under the tent while the bean bag tournament played out on the lawn.
Before Ron E. Cash finished up, he played a crowd favorite and one of mine, “I’ll Fly Away.” When a talented spoon player joined in, it added the perfect touch to close out the set.
Look out for the THUGs this weekend at the Brimson Market at Hugo’s. The Two Harbors Ukulele Group will be plucking strings, not starting skirmishes!
