After a standout showing at the MSHSL State Track & Field Championships, Trinity Giddings isn’t done yet.
The Two Harbors High School senior captured a State Championship in the 400-meter dash, clocking at 56.50 seconds in the finals and besting her own school record set just a day earlier in prelims (56.51). Her gold-medal finish was one of four podium appearances—Giddings also placed 3rd in the long jump, 4th in the 200m (25.36 seconds), and 5th in the 100m (12.74 seconds).
Giddings is now headed to the Nike Outdoor Nationals, held June 19-22 at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus in Eugene. She’ll compete against some of the best high school athletes in the nation in the long jump and 100m dash.
It was a great day for the Agates who placed 4th overall in a 3-way tie.
In field events, Tom Lampela launched his first throw of the shot put competition and broke the school record with a mark of 55’0”. This earned his 5th place in the state. In discus, he threw a personal best at 145’ 1”, finishing 12th and moving up to 3rd all-time in school history.
Fellow senior Chase Pierce also competed in shot put, finishing 12th with a throw of 50’ 0.5”.
Tommy DeChantal, Elijah Smith, Joshua Maxwell, and Carter Nelson—ran a time of 3:32.85 in the 4X400 relay, placing 21st overall. The same group also competed in the 4×200 relay, finishing 18th in 1:32.68.
Both the boys and girls Agate teams earned Gold Level Academic All-State honors, with several athletes also qualifying from Academic All-State individually: Tommy DeChantal, Rachel Bopp, Brooklyn Nelson, Delaney Nelson, Olivia Hagglund.
Though unable to compete at State this year due to a hamstring injury, senior Tate Nelson received a special shout out from the team on their Facebook page.
Nelson was originally slated to compete in the long jump and 4×200 relay, but the injury that sidelined most of his junior season continued to limit him this spring. Still, his impact is etched in school records and championship history: two State Championships, one State Runner-Up finish, Conference and Section titles, and four individual school records—the 100m, 200m, long jump, and indoor 60m—plus a spot on the record-setting 4×200 relay team.
Congratulations to the Agates for their strong performances throughout the season and at the state competition. Best of luck to Trinity Giddings as she heads to Nationals!
