APOLOGY

In reference to the article published in the Northshore Journal on July 26, 2024, “Concerned Community Demands to be Heard at Crystal Bay Township Meeting”.

The article was unfortunately reported anonymously and relayed information from anonymous sources. The Northshore Journal acknowledges that it was irresponsible journalism to allow an article about such a sensitive topic to be published anonymously and without credible sources. Due to this lapse in judgment, the Northshore Journal takes full responsibility for how this article and subsequent other articles published about the same topic negatively affected the lives of those named and their standing in the community. Choosing to report on this meeting using anonymous sources reflected a bias to our readers that is inappropriate for a community newspaper. The Northshore Journal also acknowledges that the authors of subsequent articles on this topic had been previously employed by Friends of Finland, which is a conflict of interest and does not reflect the kind of unbiased, ethical journalism we at the Journal strive for. Although the Journal did not intend any ill-will or disrespect for those involved and named in these articles – including Honor Schauland, Andrew Deyette, their families, and the broader community of adults and youth – we acknowledge that we failed to uphold our standards of ethical journalism and we sincerely apologize for the harm caused to these individuals, their families, and their reputations. In the future, the Journal will strive to report on community issues with fairness, transparency, and equal concern for all involved.
