Agates Swim and Dive Make a Strong Start with Big Finishes

School may have just started last week, but the Two Harbors Agates Swim and Dive team are already well into their season. After competing in two official meets in August, they hit the water again on Saturday, September 6, at the Spartan Relays hosted by Superior High School in Wisconsin.

The Agates delivered a strong performance at the relays, finishing third overall out of eight teams and continuing to showcase the steady growth they’ve built over the past few seasons.

“Just two years ago, we were fighting for 7th place,” posted Heather Mayfield, the team’s head coach. “I couldn’t be more proud of these ladies and just how far they’ve come.”

The Agates took top honors in two relay events. The 600- yard freestyle relay team of Bella Imholte, Claire Dreier, and Lucy Lane touched the wall first with a time of 6:47.18. Later in the meet, the 900-yard freestyle relay squad of Rylee Schmitz, Wynne Scandin, Dreier, and Lane claimed another first-place finish, clocking in at 10:45.39.

In diving, Harper Smith placed fourth with 208.95 points. She also contributed in the pool, joining Aria Oswald-Swenson, Natalia Smith, and Brynn von Goertz to take fifth in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 2:12.63.

The Agates also had strong showings in the shorter freestyle relays. In the 100-yard freestyle relay, Madison Brandt, Toby McDonald, Elizabeth Larson, and Maggie Smoot earned second place with a time of 1:01.69. In the 200-yard freestyle relay, Oswald-Swenson, Kate Senst, Larson, and Dreier finished sixth (2:05.29), rounding out the team’s competitive freestyle efforts for the day.

In the medley relays, Two Harbors continued to shine. The 200-yard medley relay squad of Harper Smith, Oswald-Swenson, Natalia Smith, and von Goertz finished fifth (2:12.63), while the 300-yard medley relay team of Scandin, Johnson, and Smith took fourth place with a time of 3:57.81.

With strong finishes, the Agates are off to an impressive start for the season. Families, friends, and fans can look forward to cheering them on at upcoming meets, including the team’s Swim-A-Thon on September 30. Watch for more information in an upcoming Northshore Journal issue!
