Silver Bowl Sending Six Youth Bowlers to Pepsi State Tourney Next Month

Six young bowlers will represent the Silver Bowl bowling alley in the Pepsi State Bowling Tournament next month. The tournament is scheduled for May 5-7 at Drkula’s 32 Bowl in Inver Grove Heights. The six bowlers came out of the 22 participants in junior leagues at the Silver Bay bowling alley this year.

Competing in the state tournament this year is Keenan Fischer, the reigning state champion in the under 8 age category. Also competing are Ellis Goutermont, Emsley Fischer, Brielle Fischer, Gabriel Russell, and Donnie Melander.

Each of these young people finished first or second in their class at district level tournaments held last month.

“This was a record year for participants in our youth leagues,” said Silver Bowl owner Logan Fischer. “We went from nine kids last year to 22 this year.”

He added that Silver Bowl is the only public bowling alley between Thunder Bay and Duluth and from Lake Superior to Virginia.

Logan and his wife, Joleen, acquired the bowling alley nine years ago. They immediately refurbished the inside, replacing machines and seating and adding a party room. The facility features eight, well maintained lanes.

Silver Bowl is open from 4 pm to close Wednesday through Saturday and operates October through the end of April. The business closes for the summer months to perform maintenance on the machines and property and allow the Fischers to enjoy family time.

Logan reports that they have 62 men and women bowling in adult leagues this year.

“We want to keep community bowling going,” Logan said. “And we try to attract new people to the sport.”

Logan and Joleen also operate All In One Fitness and Tanning in Silver Bay and a real estate rental business offering long term housing rentals for local folks on the shore. In addition, Logan is starting up a financial advisory business based in Silver Bay. A dedicated entrepreneur, he looks forward to helping residents of Lake and Cook county manage their financial resources for future growth and security. Interested bowlers, and non-bowlers interested in learning more, may call Silver Bowl at (218) 226-4479 or go to its Facebook page.

Typically these “about me” pages include a list of academic achievements (I have none) and positions held (I have had many, but who really cares about those?) So, in the words of the late Admiral James Stockwell, “Who am I? Why am I here?” I’m well into my seventh decade on this blue planet we call home. I’m a pretty successful husband, father, and grandfather, at least in my humble opinion. My progeny may disagree. We have four children and five grandchildren. I spent most of my professional life in the freight business. At the tender age of 40, early retirement beckoned and we moved to Grand Marais. A year after we got here, we bought and operated the Cook County News Herald, a weekly newspaper in Grand Marais. A sharp learning curve for a dumb freight broker to become a newspaper editor and publisher. By 1999 the News Herald was an acquisition target for a rapidly consolidating media market. We sold our businesses and “retired” again, buying a winter retreat in Nevada. In the fall of 2016, we returned to Grand Marais and bought a house from old friends of ours on the ridge overlooking Lake Superior. They were able to move closer to family and their Mexico winter home. And we came home to what we say is our last house. I’m a strong believer in the value of local newspapers--both online and those you can wrap a fish in. I write a weekly column and a couple of feature stories for the Northshore Journal. I’m most interested in writing about the everyday lives of local people and reporting on issues of importance to them.
