Youth Hockey
The North Shore Storm Bantams closed out District 11 play as champions and advance to Regionals as the No. 1 seed. The title came on the strength of a 6-0 shutout against Cloquet in Game 1 and a tense overtime win against Hermantown in Game 2, where the Storm pulled out a 3-2 finish. Regionals run February 27 through March 1 in Proctor.
The North Shore Storm 12U girls also claimed the District 11 championship over the weekend and will head to Regionals as the top seed.
Boys Varsity Hockey
North Shore entered the playoffs on February 17 at Hermantown Hockey Arena for the Class 1A, Section 7 Quarterfinal as the No. 7 seed facing No. 2 Hermantown. It was the first meeting of the season between the two teams.
Hermantown earned a 14-0 shutout, ending the Storm’s season.
Boys Varsity Basketball
Cook County traveled to McGregor on February 20 to face the Mercs and fell 67-47. Over the weekend the team made an overnight trip to the Twin Cities to watch the Minnesota Gophers, a break in the schedule before returning to regular season play.
Stella Maris Academy forfeited on February 23.
The Vikings then met Two Harbors on February 24 in a matchup of two North Shore teams on the Agates’ court. They hope to take on Stella Maris on their home court on February 27.
Two Harbors went on the road February 20 to face Greenway/ Nashwauk and lost 69-52. The team might have felt a little rust, as the coach noted a slow start.
After hosting the Vikings, the Agates will turn to Barnum on February 27 with a 7:15 tipoff at home.
Girls Varsity Basketball
Silver Bay hosted Carlton/Wrenshall on February 17 and came up just short in a 69-63 loss. After a bit of a break, the Mariners traveled to Chisholm for a February 26 matchup.
Two Harbors faced Mesabi East on February 17, with the Giants taking the win 82-23. The Agates rallied with a stronger performance against Carlton/Wrenshall on February 20 but fell 57-47.
Their final regular season game was February 24 at Proctor on the Rails’ court. Results will be reported in a future issue of North Shore Sports Shorts.
