The 12U girls hockey team competed in their last tournament of the season in Detroit Lakes, held from January 31st through February 2nd.
Under the guidance of coaches Dustin Goutermont, Jeff Bright, and Seth Christiansen, the team had already made waves earlier in the season. They were recently featured when they took first place in the Great Lake Skate Tournament, and we celebrated their victory in December when they claimed the championship at their very first tournament of the year in International Falls.
The Detroit Lakes tournament brought together twelve competitive teams to fight for the championship.
The girls kicked off the tournament with a narrow 4-3 victory over Albert Lea. Their next game on Saturday was just as intense with the girls pulling off a 1-0 shutout against New Ulm-Sleepy Eye.
Later that Saturday evening, the Storm displayed their offensive power, winning against Hastings in a 7-1 blowout. This win secured them a spot in Sunday’s championship game.
Facing off against the home team, Detroit Lakes, in the championship, the Storm fought hard in what was described as a “tough battle.” Despite their best efforts, they fell short, with the final score being 5-3. Nevertheless, their runner-up finish marked a remarkable achievement which the girls can add to their growing list of successes so far this season!
