Lake Superior School Board News

Representatives from the Northern Lights Special Education Cooperative (NLSEC) met with the School Board last week to review the services that they provide for district students. NLSEC provides a variety of services to 12 school districts throughout the state. They primarily work in smaller school districts that, on their own, do not have the financial resources to cover the educational needs of all their students. NLSEC provides training and advisory support for staff who teach in the Lake Superior District and also help with oversight support between the district and the Department of Education. NLSEC staff work providing services for students with vision and hearing impairments. They also work with students who have physical health disabilities or have Autism Spectrum Disorders. The 12 member districts pool their resources to provide NLSEC services to their students. The Board voted to approve a purchase of service agreement between LSSD and NLSEC for the 2025 – 26 school year.

Junior Jack Virginia spoke with the Board about the EMR Training program that was initiated this year between the district and the Lake County Ambulance Service. Jack is one of 5 students who are involved in the training and briefly described what the training entails. Students have been learning how to move patients safely and will be learning how to manage airways and will receive CPR training. Next month, students will further their hands-on training by riding along on ambulance calls. Students who complete the training will be eligible for EMT certification upon attaining their 18th birthday and earning their high school diploma. Jack thanked the Board for the opportunity that this training provides for students and stated that he plans to work as an EMT as he pursues a college degree.

Ekalath Sophaphanh, of ICS, presented the proposed bid contracts for the bus garages. ICS has been working with district officials to bring the costs for this project in line with what the budgeted amount will allow. The cost for both garages will be $303,000 which is in line with projections. The Board voted to accept the proposal and bids for the work are expected by the end of this month. The project completion date is projected for January of 2026.

The Board welcomed Haley Lambe to the district. Ms Lambe has joined the staff of William Kelley School as a Para Educator. She will be working with students in grades K – 3.

The Board also approved a cooperative football agreement between Two Harbors High School, Marshall High School and Lakeview Christian Academy.

The next LSSD board meeting is scheduled for April 8th at Two Harbors High School.

My wife, Marsha Kinzer (a proud DEHS Greyhound, class of ‘77) introduced me to the North Shore on vacation in 2012. It became our regular escape when the stress of our careers in education became overwhelming, and it didn’t take me long to fall in love with the breathtaking scenery, the nice people, and “salad” containing Jell-o and marshmallows. So you can either blame or thank my loving wife for my being here, because when we needed to choose a retirement hometown, Marsha advocated hard for her beloved Duluth, and here we are, six months later. Yes, this will be my first northern Minnesota winter. Yes, I welcome thoughts and prayers. Government, public policy, and social justice weighed heavily in the curriculums I taught at the high school level over a thirty-eight year career. In addition, we were a laboratory school focused on critical thinking in conjunction with technical and scientific writing. So when I found myself adrift on the great ocean of retirement and spied a raft, I jumped at the chance to take up what I’d left behind…minus the bad teachers’ lounge coffee. My position at the NSJ allows me to combine my passions for government and writing, and it’s helping me to feel less out of touch in new surroundings. When I’m not being “Cubby” (Marsha’s favorite new nickname for this green reporter) I enjoy pointing at eagles and saying, “Look, honey. There’s an eagle.” I’ve had an active side hustle as a professional musician for almost as many years as Charlie Parr. As a guitarist/singer/songwriter, I graced the stages of clubs and festivals around southern Wisconsin, including an appearance on A Prairie Home Companion. Should I even mention A Prairie Home Companion, or am I the only one here old enough to remember what that is? Look! An eagle!
