Haunted Headlines

By Sarah K. Simon

Being a journalist can be scary Any time of the year There are a few key phrases That can cause a writer fear

Like dreaded deadlines, And terrifying typos, Called-out corrections (Those haunt me the most)

“Un-fan” mail Though few and far between I’ve read through some That were downright mean

Spooky sources You’d rather avoid Icy interviews And silence deployed

A quote gone missing A fact turned untrue A ghost of a lead That never came through

But working for NSJ Is like the best of Halloween And writing about the North Shore Has me genuinely living a dream

I get the best of costume changes Wearing so many hats Investigator, sports reporter Even a poet, how about that?

I carve out stories like pumpkins Letting the light pour through Featuring all the brightest things Our community dares to do

I’ve learned a few tricks From those I’ve been able to meet And there’s a treat in every story, Even the toughest to complete

So thank you, NSJ readers, For letting me share the scene— From stories sweet to those a bit spooky, Here’s wishing you a Happy Halloween!
