As spring begins to return to the North Shore, with the weather warming and trees soon to bud, heralding new life, Easter weekend also arrives, a very apropos holiday for spring, because for Christians it celebrates the new life found through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
April 18 is Good Friday, and many churches hold a Good Friday service in remembrance of Christ’s death on the cross. In Two Harbors, the United Church will hold a service at 1:00 p.m. Holy Spirit Catholic Church’s “Passion of the Lord” service will be at 12:15 p.m., and an outdoor Stations of the Cross will be held at 7:00 p.m. United Church will hold a service at 1:00 p.m. Anchor Point Church holds their Good Friday Service at 7:00 p.m., and it is open for families to attend. Churches in Silver Bay and further up the North Shore also have Good Friday services, including St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Silver Bay at 3:00 p.m., Spirit of the Wilderness Episcopal Church in Grand Marais at 6:30 p.m., and Life in Christ Lutheran Church in Grand Marais at 6:30 p.m.
On the morning of April 19, families are invited by Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Two Harbors to an Easter Egg Hunt at Lakeview Park, beginning at 10 a.m. “Begin the holiday with joy!” an advertisement for the hunt read. That evening, Holy Spirit Catholic Church will hold an Easter Vigil at 8:30 p.m. In Silver Bay, St. Mary’s holds an Easter Vigil at 8:15 p.m.
Easter Sunday is April 20, and Christian churches across the world celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. Anchor Point Church will also be having their Baptism Sunday that day. Many other churches like Cornerstone Community Church in Grand Marais are holding breakfasts and brunches, giving individuals and families the opportunity to fellowship with each other on the most important day for the Christian church.
