The Minnesota National Guard, comprised of the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard, plays a pivotal role in ensuring the safety and security of the state and the nation. As part of the broader National Guard system, these two entities embody a unique dual mission: serving both state and federal needs.
The Minnesota Army National Guard, established in 1856, predates the state’s admission to the Union. It is one of the oldest state militias in the country, with a proud history of service in domestic emergencies and overseas conflicts. With over 10,000 members, the Minnesota Army National Guard operates across a range of disciplines, including infantry, engineering, aviation, and medical support. These citizen-soldiers balance their civilian careers with their commitment to service, standing ready to respond to natural disasters, public safety emergencies, and combat deployments.
The Minnesota Air National Guard was established in 1921, with its first unit—the 109th Observation Squadron—becoming one of the nation’s earliest Air Guard units. Today with over 2,000 members, the Air Guard’s two main wings, the 133rd Airlift Wing in St. Paul and the 148th Fighter Wing in Duluth, represent a highly capable force. The 133rd specializes in airlift missions, utilizing C-130H3
Hercules aircraft to transport personnel and cargo globally, while the 148th operates F-16CM Fighting Falcon jets, providing air superiority and precision strike capabilities. Together, these wings enhance the state’s and nation’s defense readiness.
A key distinction between the National Guard and its active-duty federal counterparts lies in its dual status. National Guard members are primarily under the command of the state governor but can be federalized during national emergencies or overseas operations. This dual authority allows the Minnesota National Guard to respond quickly to local crises, such as severe weather events or civil unrest, while also supporting federal missions abroad. The Guard’s flexibility ensures that Minnesota’s communities and national interests are protected.
The motto of the Minnesota National Guard, “Always Ready, Always There,” reflects the dedication and resilience of its members. Whether providing disaster relief at home or defending freedom abroad, the Minnesota Army and Air National Guard remain indispensable components of the state’s and nation’s security framework.
From patrolling Minnesota skies to aiding neighbors during floods, these men and women embody the best of both military discipline and community spirit. Their commitment to both state and country is a testament to their enduring value as Minnesota’s dual defenders.
