Two Harbors Council: The Year In Review

The Two Harbors Council took time on Monday night to review the projects that have been accomplished over the past year. There has been a significant amount of work that the Council has initiated to bring much needed upgrades and improvements to city infrastructure. Extensive upgrades have been underway at the Two Harbors Airport including, repairs to the taxiway, replacement of the airport beacon and construction of a new Arrivals / Departure building which will get its finishing touches this Spring. Construction at both the Water and Wastewater treatment facilities has been completed. Some landscaping work will complete the project when the weather allows for such work. The new Liquor Store (Breakwall Bottle Shoppe) is open and offers expanded space and a wider selection of products. The Breakwall Bottle Shoppe is currently increasing their inventory to include a variety of non-alcoholic products. Additionally, there has been ongoing work on street and utility improvement which will continue in 2025 and beyond.

Public services have also been busy over the past year. The Two Harbors Fire Department covers a territory of over 5000 miles with a crew of 23 members. In addition to fighting fires, they provided 100 hours of fire prevention training in 2024. The Police Department responded to over 4000 calls in the past year. Two weeks ago a new officer joined their ranks to help with the workload.

In addition to upgrades to the Library building, area residents have been making good use of the facility. 64,909 items were checked out by library patrons in 2024.

City Administrators have been wanting to hire a City Planner for some time. While a search for the right person is underway, the Council voted to have Bolton and Menk provide a staff person for general planning support on a part time basis. Apparently, Lake County is also looking to hire a planning professional so it is likely that, in time, a professional will be hired to cover planning needs for both the County and the City.

Winter Frolic is on tap for February 7th and 8th. The next Two Harbors Council meeting is scheduled for February 24th at 5:30.

My wife, Marsha Kinzer (a proud DEHS Greyhound, class of ‘77) introduced me to the North Shore on vacation in 2012. It became our regular escape when the stress of our careers in education became overwhelming, and it didn’t take me long to fall in love with the breathtaking scenery, the nice people, and “salad” containing Jell-o and marshmallows. So you can either blame or thank my loving wife for my being here, because when we needed to choose a retirement hometown, Marsha advocated hard for her beloved Duluth, and here we are, six months later. Yes, this will be my first northern Minnesota winter. Yes, I welcome thoughts and prayers. Government, public policy, and social justice weighed heavily in the curriculums I taught at the high school level over a thirty-eight year career. In addition, we were a laboratory school focused on critical thinking in conjunction with technical and scientific writing. So when I found myself adrift on the great ocean of retirement and spied a raft, I jumped at the chance to take up what I’d left behind…minus the bad teachers’ lounge coffee. My position at the NSJ allows me to combine my passions for government and writing, and it’s helping me to feel less out of touch in new surroundings. When I’m not being “Cubby” (Marsha’s favorite new nickname for this green reporter) I enjoy pointing at eagles and saying, “Look, honey. There’s an eagle.” I’ve had an active side hustle as a professional musician for almost as many years as Charlie Parr. As a guitarist/singer/songwriter, I graced the stages of clubs and festivals around southern Wisconsin, including an appearance on A Prairie Home Companion. Should I even mention A Prairie Home Companion, or am I the only one here old enough to remember what that is? Look! An eagle!
