Local Artist Presents Experimental Dance Solo

On August 24, local artist Kayla Schiltgen will be presenting her experimental dance solo, “is this magic?” at Lagom by DEPT. two on 7th Avenue in Two Harbors. “is this magic?” blends live performance and screendance film projections to “explore authentic personal expression as a radical act of self acceptance.” Schiltgen further describes “is this magic?” in her press release: “Unfolding through an improvisational movement score prioritizing intuition, desire, resourcefulness, and play, each performance is a unique manifestation, offering nuance and fresh meaning.”

Minneapolis musician Dean Sibinski will be providing the musical setting for “is this magic?”, and the performance is stage managed by Two Harbors artist Eric Elefson. Kayla Schiltgen describes herself as “guided by rhythms of the natural world”, and uses her art as a means to “explore her personal truth and mental health”. “Sharing with profound honesty, her art is a loud and persuasive means to cope and communicate. A catalyst for her belief that personal, environmental, and collective belonging are found in our affection and emotion, her work facilitates feeling rawer, thinking deeper, and expressing more authentically for herself and audiences.” The Two Harbors performance of “is this magic?” will be held at 7:30 p.m. on August 24th. Tickets are payable, with a suggested range of $5.00 to $25.00, and can be purchased at https://www.kaylaschiltgen.com/store/p51/danceperformanceTwoHarborsMn.html.  The performance is made possible in part by Minnesota voters through a grant from the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council, via appropriations from the Minnesota State Legislature’s general and arts and cultural heritage funds. For those interested who may be unable to view the experimental dance solo in Two Harbors, “is this magic?” will be traveling to Battle Lake, Detroit Lakes, Ely, and Grand Marais in 2025.

Haley Searls
Hello! My name is Haley Searls. I’ve loved writing from an early age, though my nonfiction writing at five years old consisted mainly of weather and gardening reports. I still have some of those early articles: “It’s sunny.” “It’s still sunny.” “It’s raining.” I’m glad to say my writing has improved since then. I wrote a guest post for the Silver Bay Public Library blog, and was the writer/editor of the newsletter for my American Heritage Girls troop. I have been writing for the North Shore Journal since June 2022. Besides writing, I love reading, drawing, photography, music, and spending time with family and friends. Two books that have really influenced my writing are Reforming Journalism by Marvin Olasky and Writer to Writer by Bodie and Brock Thoene. As a journalist, I want to share positive community interactions and inspire people to make lasting connections. Article topics that interest me are ones which show community activities and involvement. Such articles include community events, youth accomplishments, library programming, small businesses, local history, local artists and authors, art programs, and cultural events such as theater and dance. If you have an article idea, email the North Shore Journal with my name in the subject line! I look forward to hearing from you!
