Grand Marais, MN, June 7, 2024: Joining the community’s month-long celebration of LGBTQIA2+ Pride, Grand Marais Public Library presents Patrick Scully in a solo theatrical performance of Portrait of the Artist as a Young Gay Man. Taking place at the library on June 21, 2024, the event is free and open to the public. Doors open at 5:30 PM and the performance begins at 6 PM. Seating is limited and available on first come, first served. This performance is intended for adults.
Patrick Scully is a Minneapolis based performing artist well known for co-founding Contactworks, a Minneapolis based dance collective focused on contact improvisation, and Patrick’s Cabaret, a queer-led performance art incubator. He danced and toured with Remy Charlip, beginning with Charlip’s Ten Men. He has performed everything from large scale group works like Ballet for Boats, which was done to great critical acclaim in both Minneapolis (2015) and Potsdam, Germany (2010), to more intimate and often biographical solo pieces, which have included Too Soon Lost (1990) and Thrive! (2010).
In Portrait of the Artist as a Young Gay Man, Scully mixes together stories of his personal life, his life as an artist and activist, and progress and setbacks in the world of LGBTQ rights. Set in the 60s through the 80s, the performance journeys through the ups and downs of Scully’s coming out story, the victories and defeats of Minneapolis and St. Paul passing laws protecting Lesbian, Gay and Trans rights, and Harvey Milk’s legacy in San Francisco. If you were out and about in that era, it will bring back memories of those days, good and not so good. If this was all before your time, it promises an engaging history lesson that no school has yet taught.
Patrick Scully is a fiscal year 2024 recipient of an Arts Experiences grant and a fiscal year 2023 recipient of a Creative Support for Individuals grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
