Football: Cook County Vikings Celebrate Victory at North Woods Grizzlys’ Den

The Cook County Vikings Varsity Football team traveled to the North Wood High School on Wednesday, October 18th for their last regular season game. Both teams were going into the evening with a 3-4-0 record. The Vikings had built a two-game winning streak momentum after beating North Central 38-0 the previous week, and beating Cass Lake-Bena 62-6 the week before.

The Vikings did not waste much time at all as #16 Ray Dressely, a senior, picked up the ball at the opening kickoff, after a couple of bounces, and ran it 70 yards down to the opposite end for a touchdown. Junior #11 Hunter Rex found his way into the end zone for the 2-point conversion. Cook County had set the tone for the game early.

“Unreal,” I heard a Grizzly fan mumble. It kind of was. Only 11 seconds in and it was 8-0. #16 Ray Dressely would score the next touchdown, as well, and the first quarter would end in a 14-0 lead for the Vikings.

The scoreboard stayed that way much of the next quarter until, with 1:44 left, Ray Dressely scored his second touchdown of the game. With another successful 2-point conversion, the score was 22-0. Less than a minute later, an exciting interception by #41 Rohan Rude, a junior, gave the Vikings another chance to score. After they took a quick time-out, #16 Ray Dressely scored again. Senior #43 Calvin Battees ran in for the extra 2 points and the quarter ended 30-0.

In the 3rd, #16 Ray Dressely picked up an incomplete in the end-zone and ran it all the way down the field. Grizzly fans were screaming “Get Him!!” They did not get him. Before the 3rd was over, #9 Jordan Backstrom, a junior, brought the score to 44-0 with a touchdown with 2:02 left to play.

Late into the 4th, a long pass to #7 Macoy Fairbanks, a freshman, resulted in the final touchdown of the game that ended in a 50-0 win for the Vikings.

At the time of this article’s release, Cook County will have already played on their home turf against Kelliher/Northome on October 24th, at 6:00 PM. I have high hopes and can’t wait to see how they do!

The Two Harbors Agates also won their last regular season game, with a 49-3 victory over Hibbing on Thursday, October 19th. They are set to play Hibbing again on Tuesday the 24th at the Two Harbors High School’s Stadium Field. If they have taken the win, they’ll be playing on Saturday, October 28th, at 2:00 PM at Pequot Lakes.

Best of luck to all the teams during their playoff season!
