Finishing out July at the Grand Marais Library

Summer has flown by, but as we reach the middle of July, there are still library events to be enjoyed. Grand Marais Public Library’s summer reading program began June 10, but children ages birth to 18 can sign up at any time. Materials and instructions are available at the library, or by mail. The program runs until August 9th, and features “Crafternoons” on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 to 4 p.m. Also part of the reading program is a weekly RPG Club that meets on Wednesdays from 4 to 6 p.m., and a children’s storytime on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m.

Four special events were scheduled for July at the library. On July 13 a haiku workshop was held with Sandra Hisakuni, who was from Minnesota but moved to Japan, raising her two children there, before returning to the United States. July 17, Jackie Fallon of the Midwest Peregrine Society visited with her peregrine falcon program. The Midwest Peregrine Society was formed to ensure the survival of peregrine falcons in the Midwest and Canadian Great Lakes Region. July 18 a program on invasive aquatic species was presented by Aquatic Invasive Species Program Supervisor Amanda Weberg. Coming up on July 27th is the final special event of the month, one last chance to see “Will Hale and the Tadpole Parade”, an interactive children’s concert held at 11 a.m.

As is the theme of the 2024 summer reading program, keep reading, renewing, and repeating the process! The Grand Marais Public Library is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Haley Searls
Hello! My name is Haley Searls. I’ve loved writing from an early age, though my nonfiction writing at five years old consisted mainly of weather and gardening reports. I still have some of those early articles: “It’s sunny.” “It’s still sunny.” “It’s raining.” I’m glad to say my writing has improved since then. I wrote a guest post for the Silver Bay Public Library blog, and was the writer/editor of the newsletter for my American Heritage Girls troop. I have been writing for the North Shore Journal since June 2022. Besides writing, I love reading, drawing, photography, music, and spending time with family and friends. Two books that have really influenced my writing are Reforming Journalism by Marvin Olasky and Writer to Writer by Bodie and Brock Thoene. As a journalist, I want to share positive community interactions and inspire people to make lasting connections. Article topics that interest me are ones which show community activities and involvement. Such articles include community events, youth accomplishments, library programming, small businesses, local history, local artists and authors, art programs, and cultural events such as theater and dance. If you have an article idea, email the North Shore Journal with my name in the subject line! I look forward to hearing from you!
