Cook County Extension to host North Shore Farmers Meet-up

Grand Marais, MN. (2/7/2025)— Cook County University of Minnesota Extension will host a winter meet up for local farmers and agricultural producers in March.

The gathering will take place from 9:30 am-4 pm on Friday March 14th at the Cook County Community Center in Grand Marais. This event is free to attend and lunch will be provided. In the morning, Extension Educator Natalie Hoidal will present a workshop on soil health for vegetable farming. The workshop will give farmers insights into how to interpret soil test results and how to make decisions about inputs for soil health including new research results from the U of MN. If you have taken a soil test at your farm, bring it with you to receive 1:1 support to help interpret it. Following lunch, participants will join discussion tables on topics of interest. We’ll also provide input on an exciting opportunity: the Northwoods Food Project is creating a shared equipment library for local food processing equipment.

Registration is required by March 7th to get a head count for lunch. When registering, you can indicate whether you will attend the full day or just the morning or afternoon. This event is for local operators of small farm/agricultural businesses on the North Shore of Lake Superior to gather and learn from each other. Farms at any stage of development and from any agricultural type are welcome- from vegetables to maple syrup, livestock to flowers.

“This annual event is a favorite for local farmers and producers,” said Sarah Waddle, Extension Educator. “Sharing practical information and building relationships helps farmers learn and meet their own goals.”

Typically these “about me” pages include a list of academic achievements (I have none) and positions held (I have had many, but who really cares about those?) So, in the words of the late Admiral James Stockwell, “Who am I? Why am I here?” I’m well into my seventh decade on this blue planet we call home. I’m a pretty successful husband, father, and grandfather, at least in my humble opinion. My progeny may disagree. We have four children and five grandchildren. I spent most of my professional life in the freight business. At the tender age of 40, early retirement beckoned and we moved to Grand Marais. A year after we got here, we bought and operated the Cook County News Herald, a weekly newspaper in Grand Marais. A sharp learning curve for a dumb freight broker to become a newspaper editor and publisher. By 1999 the News Herald was an acquisition target for a rapidly consolidating media market. We sold our businesses and “retired” again, buying a winter retreat in Nevada. In the fall of 2016, we returned to Grand Marais and bought a house from old friends of ours on the ridge overlooking Lake Superior. They were able to move closer to family and their Mexico winter home. And we came home to what we say is our last house. I’m a strong believer in the value of local newspapers--both online and those you can wrap a fish in. I write a weekly column and a couple of feature stories for the Northshore Journal. I’m most interested in writing about the everyday lives of local people and reporting on issues of importance to them.
