Silver Bay Council Looks to Update SCADA System for Wastewater Treatment Facility

How many times a day do we each turn on the kitchen tap? Water comes out at the temperature we request. We filter it, drink it, wash it and cook with it and if you’re like me, you may never consider the infrastructure that makes it all possible. The Silver Bay City Council does think about such things and took up the issue of replacing the SCADA system at the wastewater treatment facility on Monday night.

SCADA stands for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition. A SCADA system consists of both hardware and software components that allow for monitoring, analyzing and con-trolling industrial equipment. In the case of the city’s waste-water treatment plant, SCADA enables both on-site and remote analysis and allows the Wastewater Treatment staff to know that the system is working properly or, if something goes wrong, it helps them identify the nature and location of the problem. The current monitoring system is old and may be difficult to service and the Public Works Department has recommended that the Council look into an upgrade. Council members Shane Hoff and Ben Bautch had some questions about the upgrades, so the Council decided to table the proposal until the March 18th Council meeting.

The HVAC and ventilation systems at the Reunion Hall need to be replaced and the Council approved a contract with Jamar Construction for the work. The plan is to install a more efficient cooling and heating system. The project-ed cost for the project will be around $114,285 which will be covered by funds from the American Rescue Plan.

The Lake County 2024 CSAH Project has been pushed back to 2025. With the ongoing school projects and utility work being done in the area and in consultation with the Lake County Highway Department, the Council decided that it would be more cost effective to delay the project for a year.

Dates for City-Wide Exchange Day are coming up. May 18th and June 8th are the first two dates where residents can place unwanted items at the curb for pickup. Residents are reminded that items left at the curb on Monday following the Exchange Day will be disposed of at the resident’s expense.

Full Sun Services will once again be offering residents of Silver Bay free brush removal from May 28th to 30th. There are some parameters on what can be picked up. Information can be obtained by contacting City Hall.

The next Silver Bay Council meeting is scheduled for March 18th at 7:00.

My wife, Marsha Kinzer (a proud DEHS Greyhound, class of ‘77) introduced me to the North Shore on vacation in 2012. It became our regular escape when the stress of our careers in education became overwhelming, and it didn’t take me long to fall in love with the breathtaking scenery, the nice people, and “salad” containing Jell-o and marshmallows. So you can either blame or thank my loving wife for my being here, because when we needed to choose a retirement hometown, Marsha advocated hard for her beloved Duluth, and here we are, six months later. Yes, this will be my first northern Minnesota winter. Yes, I welcome thoughts and prayers. Government, public policy, and social justice weighed heavily in the curriculums I taught at the high school level over a thirty-eight year career. In addition, we were a laboratory school focused on critical thinking in conjunction with technical and scientific writing. So when I found myself adrift on the great ocean of retirement and spied a raft, I jumped at the chance to take up what I’d left behind…minus the bad teachers’ lounge coffee. My position at the NSJ allows me to combine my passions for government and writing, and it’s helping me to feel less out of touch in new surroundings. When I’m not being “Cubby” (Marsha’s favorite new nickname for this green reporter) I enjoy pointing at eagles and saying, “Look, honey. There’s an eagle.” I’ve had an active side hustle as a professional musician for almost as many years as Charlie Parr. As a guitarist/singer/songwriter, I graced the stages of clubs and festivals around southern Wisconsin, including an appearance on A Prairie Home Companion. Should I even mention A Prairie Home Companion, or am I the only one here old enough to remember what that is? Look! An eagle!
