A slight deviation from my usual format, I would like to highlight some local happenings related to an upcoming holiday. No, I am not referring to Halloween, if it is an actual “holiday”, but instead Veterans Day. While this will not be a lengthy history lesson, there is additional significance to the date November 11 in which we honor all Veterans past and present. For those interested and playing along at home, I am referring to Armistice Day (1918, the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month). Fast forward to today, we have some local opportunities to show our support and thank our Veterans.
The National Association of Counties (NACo) and the National Association of County Veteran Service Officers (NACVSO) invite the nation’s 3,069 counties to join Operation Green Light and show support for veterans by lighting buildings green from November 7 to November 13. By shining a green light, county governments and our residents will let veterans know that they are seen, appreciated and supported, and inspire them to reach out to their county veteran service officers. Please show your support by turning the porch light green or asking your local business and governments to add a green light to their buildings.
The Minnehaha Elementary School in Two Harbors is planning a Veterans Day program. The short event will be held on Tuesday, November 8, 2022, at 2:00 PM, and may include songs and essays by the school children. The Anderson-Claffy Post 109, American Legion Honor Guard will be on hand for the presentation of Colors. More information will be available closer to the event date.
The Anderson-Claffy Post 109, American Legion in Two Harbors will be hosting their Veterans Day Dinner/Program on Friday, November 11, 2022. This event is a perfect opportunity for Veterans and their spouses/significant others to gather and enjoy a good meal and comradery. Rumor is, the Lake County Veterans Service Officer is planning to attend the event and be available to answer Veterans benefits related questions. I would venture a guess he would be available for more than just talking shop. The Post will be providing additional information regarding event registration in the very near future.
If I have not been clear, then please note that Friday, November 11, 2022, is Veterans Day.
