Northern Minnesota
Helium Discovery
Brings Economic Promise

When you think of helium, you probably think of balloons. But did you know helium is also essential for many other industries and lifesaving technologies? It’s used to power superconducting magnets in MRI machines, create heliox (a helium–oxygen blend that helps people with respiratory issues breathe easier), pressurize rocket fuel tanks, assist in deep-sea diving, and support precision welding.

Currently, the United States faces a helium shortage, but a substantial new discovery in Northern Minnesota could help change that. In our own backyard, geologic samples have revealed world-class concentrations of helium with exceptionally high purity levels. This is a phenomenal opportunity for Minnesota to benefit from a resource that’s in global demand.

Last week, I traveled to the exploration site in Isabella, Minnesota, to spend time with geologists observing the drilling process. The site’s footprint is remarkably small, yet the helium potential appears to be very significant. This discovery could bring tremendous financial security and new economic opportunities to our region.

In addition to helium, scientists have identified significant CO2 reserves at the site. Carbon dioxide plays an essential role across Minnesota industries— from microbreweries and soda production to food manufacturing, where it extends shelf life, to water treatment facilities and fiber optic cable production. Our state currently faces a shortage of CO2, so this find represents yet another valuable opportunity for both businesses and consumers.

Ensuring strong commercial partnerships and business investments in our region will help stabilize and grow our local tax base. Commercial properties pay a significantly higher share of property taxes, and by expanding our economic base, we can help relieve the burden on homeowners.

As legislation is drafted to support this new discovery, helium could soon be transported through the rail and port system in Two Harbors — linking our region directly to national and global markets. After two billion years, the rock formations beneath us have created the perfect conditions for helium and CO2, and Minnesota now has the chance to lead the way in responsibly developing these resources.

When our region is strong, our communities are stronger. During World War II, Minnesota’s mining industry helped win the war. Today, our backyard holds resources that ensure patients can receive MRI scans, manufacturers can keep products on shelves, and businesses can continue to grow. With innovation, stewardship, and collaboration, this discovery has the power to fuel both our economy and our future.
