North Shore Horizons
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time dedicated to shedding light on a pervasive issue that impacts countless individuals and families in our community and across the nation. Domestic violence, often hidden behind closed doors, is a pattern of abusive behaviors by one person against a family/household member, or intimate partner. This can include physical assault, sexual assault, psychological abuse, and emotional abuse. It knows no boundaries of age, race, socioeconomic status, or gender, leaving a devastating ripple effect of trauma, fear, and sometimes, tragic loss.
This month, we are called to not only acknowledge the harsh reality of domestic violence but also to amplify the voices of survivors and remember those who have been silenced forever. Domestic violence is not a private matter; it is a societal problem that demands our collective attention and action. It thrives in secrecy, and our willingness to speak out and support those affected is crucial in breaking the silence of abuse.
To honor the memory of victims who have lost their lives due to domestic violence in Minnesota, and to bring poignant awareness to this critical issue, the Lake County Attorney’s office division of Victim Services and North Shore Horizon are partnering together to host a “Silent Plate Exhibit”. This emotive display serves as a stark reminder of the lives tragically cut short and aims to give voice to those who can no longer speak for themselves. The exhibit will include resources available for victims of Domestic Violence in Lake County, and on-site trained advocates will be available to speak with anyone who feels impacted or needs immediate support.
The Silent Plate Exhibit will be on display from October 27th through October 31st at the Lake County Courthouse, displayed in the Atrium. We encourage all members of the community to visit this moving exhibit, to reflect on the impact of domestic violence, and to stand in solidarity with survivors and victims’ families.
Each silent plate represents a life lost, a story untold, and a future unfulfilled due to domestic violence. By bearing witness to this exhibit, we not only pay tribute to these individuals but also reaffirm our commitment to creating a community where domestic violence is not tolerated and where every person can live free from fear and abuse.
