Two Harbors opened their volleyball season at home against Silver Bay on August 26, hoping to start with a win in the ongoing War for the Oar. The Agates fell 3-0, giving up the wooden oar to the Mariners. They then traveled to face Moose Lake-Willow River, where they again lost 3-0, and hosted Esko on September 4, falling 3-0.
Despite the early setbacks, Two Harbors bounced back at the Duluth Marshall Tournament on September 6, going undefeated and taking first place for the second year in a row.
Silver Bay, meanwhile, began its season earlier, opening August 23 at a tournament with wins over Ogilvie (2-0) and Cook County (2-0) before a 2-0 loss to Laporte. They played Cromwell-Wright on September 2, winning 3-1, and also participated in the September 6 Duluth Marshall Tournament. The Mariners finished second in that tournament, defeating Cook County, Fond du Lac, and Duluth Marshall along the way.
Cook County opened its season even earlier, losing to Cromwell-Wright 3-0 on August 21 at home. At the August 23 Northland Tournament, they won 2-0 against Red Lake and 2-0 against Hill City/Northland. On September 4, they fell 3-0 at Floodwood and also participated in the September 6 tournament.
The early season has seen teams testing lineups, finding chemistry, and chasing victories, but each team has shone much potential for a stellar season. It will be a fun one to follow!
Congratulations on the tournament win, Agates! And best of luck to all local volleyball teams in the 2025 season!
