Two Harbors City Council: Lead Service Line Inventory; Dog Park

Two Harbors residents are reminded that representatives from Bolton and Menk are conducting a Lead Service Line inventory in the city. This endeavor is part of a Minnesota Department of Health and EPA effort to identify and eventually replace lead water pipes with a product that does not present the health hazard that is present in lead pipes. The inventory is the first step in this process and is done at no cost to the homeowner. Staff from Bolton and Menk will be wearing identification and will need about 5 minutes to conduct the survey. Residents who are not at home will find a hang tag on their door indicating that surveyors have been there. If residents are familiar with their waterlines, they may be able to identify the type of service line they have without the help of Bolton and Menk staff. For more information, residents can contact City Hall or visit the Minnesota Department of Health web site under Lead Service Line Replacement Program Facts.

A sizable group of area residents were present at Monday night’s meeting to voice support for the creation of a dog park in Two Harbors. There are a number of community benefits that come with having a dog park. These include reduction of problematic dog encounters in public spaces, the encouragement of good dog care, such spaces are an amenity both for residents and tourists and the promotion of exercise and health for both k9 friends and their owners. The Council is working on a city wide parks plan and while no definite details have been established, the plan to enhance our public parks can include a dog park. The Council has agreed to add this issue to their discussions on park planning for the city.

Minnesota Pollution Control is working with the Canadian National Railroad to address the problem of ore dust in the city. The current system that is being used is 50 years old and obviously does not adequately deal with the dust that is generated at the ore docks. The Council voted to sign a letter of support to address this situation.

The Council also voted to approve an agreement between the city and the Lake Superior School District for the extension of a water main to their property line for the Buss Garage Project on 4th Street. The School District will cover the cost of the extension.

The Council will be presented with a preliminary budget for 2026 at the September 23rd council meeting and Donna Heil was sworn in as counselor at large.

The next Two Harbors Council meeting is scheduled for September 8th at 5:30 PM.

My wife, Marsha Kinzer (a proud DEHS Greyhound, class of ‘77) introduced me to the North Shore on vacation in 2012. It became our regular escape when the stress of our careers in education became overwhelming, and it didn’t take me long to fall in love with the breathtaking scenery, the nice people, and “salad” containing Jell-o and marshmallows. So you can either blame or thank my loving wife for my being here, because when we needed to choose a retirement hometown, Marsha advocated hard for her beloved Duluth, and here we are, six months later. Yes, this will be my first northern Minnesota winter. Yes, I welcome thoughts and prayers. Government, public policy, and social justice weighed heavily in the curriculums I taught at the high school level over a thirty-eight year career. In addition, we were a laboratory school focused on critical thinking in conjunction with technical and scientific writing. So when I found myself adrift on the great ocean of retirement and spied a raft, I jumped at the chance to take up what I’d left behind…minus the bad teachers’ lounge coffee. My position at the NSJ allows me to combine my passions for government and writing, and it’s helping me to feel less out of touch in new surroundings. When I’m not being “Cubby” (Marsha’s favorite new nickname for this green reporter) I enjoy pointing at eagles and saying, “Look, honey. There’s an eagle.” I’ve had an active side hustle as a professional musician for almost as many years as Charlie Parr. As a guitarist/singer/songwriter, I graced the stages of clubs and festivals around southern Wisconsin, including an appearance on A Prairie Home Companion. Should I even mention A Prairie Home Companion, or am I the only one here old enough to remember what that is? Look! An eagle!
