Two Harbors athletes made school history last week at the annual Thunder Invitational track and field meet, hosted by Zimmerman High School. Despite cold and rainy conditions, Agate seniors Chase Pierce and Trinity Giddings delivered performances that left a mark—literally rewriting the record books.
Chase Pierce, a senior thrower for the Agates, became just the fifth athlete in Two Harbors High School history to throw the shot put over 50 feet. Pierce launched the shot to an impressive distance of 50 feet, 6.25 inches, earning him a spot in fifth place on the school’s all-time leaderboard.
He now sits just a quarter-inch behind fourth place, and only 3 feet, 4.75 inches away from breaking the longstanding school record of 53 feet, 11 inches—a mark set by Jim Ravnikar in 1974. Pierce is committed to continuing his athletic career at UW–Superior, and his recent performance shows he’s more than ready for the next level.
Meanwhile, on the track, fellow senior Trinity Giddings sprinted into school history, breaking the Two Harbors school record in the 100-meter dash with an incredible time of 12.35 seconds. The previous record, set by her teammate Delaney Nelson last year, stood strong at 12.49 seconds— an exceptional mark.
Giddings’ feat is all the more remarkable considering the challenging weather conditions at the meet. Her speed and determination helped her cross the finish line and etch her name in the record books.
Giddings also impressed in the long jump, landing a leap of 17 feet, 8 inches. That mark meets the MileSplit US Second Team standard, further cementing her reputation as one of Minnesota’s top high school athletes.
No stranger to the spotlight—Giddings has previously earned All-State honors in multiple events and will continue her track and field career at Minnesota State University, Mankato.
Earlier this season, Giddings broke the Griak Invitational 400-meter dash meet record. Her time of 58.07 seconds shattered a 27-year-old record, firmly establishing her as one of the most dominant sprinters in the state.
Both athletes’ accomplishments are the result of years of hard work, dedication, and a competitive spirit that has become a hallmark of the Agates track and field program. With the season in full swing, all eyes will be on Giddings and Pierce as they continue to push boundaries and inspire their teammates, many of whom are also setting records early this season!
