From the desk of Representative Natalie Zeleznikarà

Dear Northlanders,

Spring is just around the corner, and the activity level at the Capitol is high as we approach the end of the legislative session in just two short months. There is still a lot of work to be done to pass a balanced budget. With the House tied at 67- 67, every bill requires at least one member from across the aisle to pass legislation, with the minimum required being 68 votes.

Last session ended without a bonding bill, and I truly believe that passing a bonding bill for 2025 is critical, particularly for essential water projects and other important community needs. At the regional level, I authored a bill to secure additional funding to complete the Highway 61 construction through Two Harbors. This project is vital for both the region and for tourism across the entire area.

Another important initiative I am supporting is the Gitchi Gami Trail. I am honored to advocate for continued funding for this incredible trail, which is such a great asset to our region. Additionally, I’ve supported more funding for ATV trails in the area. One of my favorite rides is the trail in Silver Bay, and I’m looking forward to riding it again this September. In fact, a University of Minnesota study on the economic impact of ATV riding found that, in 2023, ATV activities generated a $36 million economic impact for Lake, St. Louis, and Koochiching Counties. Our region has so much to offer residents and tourists alike, and it’s exciting to see economic development flourishing here.

I’ve also been meeting with teachers, both back home and at the Capitol, to discuss pension reform for Tier II teachers. In the late 1980s, pensions were altered, and many teachers have been seeking options and pathways to retirement before age 65 after 30 years of service. I’ve signed onto several bills addressing this issue and look forward to continuing the conversation.

Additionally, I’m working diligently on addressing non-emergency transportation needs, securing funding for ambulances, and ensuring critical funding streams for our critical access hospitals remain intact. The Governor’s budget proposes significant cuts, which could negatively impact both the Grand Marais and Two Harbors nursing homes, totaling over $1 million in losses between 2026 and 2029. As the only Representative with experience running nursing homes and 24-hour operations, I continue to strongly advocate against cuts of this magnitude.

Please mark your calendars for Saturday, April 5th at 1:00 p.m. and join me, along with Rep. Roger Skraba and Sen. Grant Hauschild, at Two Harbors High School for a town hall. This is a great opportunity to engage with your elected representatives and ask questions. I look forward to spending time with you all soon!

In service,
Rep. Natalie Zeleznikar
State Representative, District 3B
