Silver Bay City Council: City Code Amendment, Senior Workshop, Cannabis Management

The Silver Bay City Council conducted business in an efficient manner last Monday night, before a chamber crowded with local residents.

Questions were asked about the Senior Workshop being moved to the high school and how, after that move takes place, residents wishing to use the workshop will be able to access the facility. Details are still being worked out between city and school officials, but the plan will involve issuing electronic key fobs to those interested in using workshop equipment. This will make access pretty straightforward. Records indicate that nine people have used the workshop in its current location over the past three or four months. Stay tuned for updated information as protocols are worked out with school officials.

The City newsletter will be coming out by the end of this week. Newsletters will be available at City Hall and other locations and will also be available online at the City’s website.

All residents are invited to “connect with the cosmos” for the upcoming Superior Dark Sky Experience. Activities will be held in Silver Bay on October 25th from 3:30 to 7:00 pm at the Mary Mac Center and on October 26th from 3:00 to 10:00 pm at the Clair Nelson Center in Finland. There will be fun activities for the kids, attendees will be able to engage in discussion with Dark Sky experts, and the documentary film Northern Nights, Starry Skies will be shown. More information about the event is available on the Lovin’ Lake County Events website.

The Council voted to amend Chapter 5, section 550, of the city code concerning nuisance weeds, grass and junk. The section of the code concerning unsheltered storage has been removed after input from area residents. The code in its entirety is available online (www.silverbay.com).

A Special Meeting of the Planning and Zoning and Economic Development Committees has been set for October 28th at 2:00. The topic of discussion at that meeting will focus on decisions that city officials need to have in place by January 1st for zoning and regulation of cannabis businesses in the city. The cannabis moratorium that was recently adopted by the Council will run through the end of December, at which time, State officials at the Office of Cannabis Management will make public what the rules and regulations will be state wide for the Cannabis industry. City officials are doing their due diligence now so that city regulations will line up with soon to be announced State laws.

The next Silver Bay Council meeting is scheduled for October 21st at 7 PM.

My wife, Marsha Kinzer (a proud DEHS Greyhound, class of ‘77) introduced me to the North Shore on vacation in 2012. It became our regular escape when the stress of our careers in education became overwhelming, and it didn’t take me long to fall in love with the breathtaking scenery, the nice people, and “salad” containing Jell-o and marshmallows. So you can either blame or thank my loving wife for my being here, because when we needed to choose a retirement hometown, Marsha advocated hard for her beloved Duluth, and here we are, six months later. Yes, this will be my first northern Minnesota winter. Yes, I welcome thoughts and prayers. Government, public policy, and social justice weighed heavily in the curriculums I taught at the high school level over a thirty-eight year career. In addition, we were a laboratory school focused on critical thinking in conjunction with technical and scientific writing. So when I found myself adrift on the great ocean of retirement and spied a raft, I jumped at the chance to take up what I’d left behind…minus the bad teachers’ lounge coffee. My position at the NSJ allows me to combine my passions for government and writing, and it’s helping me to feel less out of touch in new surroundings. When I’m not being “Cubby” (Marsha’s favorite new nickname for this green reporter) I enjoy pointing at eagles and saying, “Look, honey. There’s an eagle.” I’ve had an active side hustle as a professional musician for almost as many years as Charlie Parr. As a guitarist/singer/songwriter, I graced the stages of clubs and festivals around southern Wisconsin, including an appearance on A Prairie Home Companion. Should I even mention A Prairie Home Companion, or am I the only one here old enough to remember what that is? Look! An eagle!
