Hockey season has arrived in a flurry, and the North Shore Storm girls hockey team has taken the ice with determination, playing two games in the week before the boys’ season began.
The Storm faced off against the Duluth North Stars in their opening game at the Rukavina Arena in Silver Bay on November 12th. It was early in the first period when Duluth took a penalty for interference. Senior Nina Thorson, #7, seized the opportunity and scored the first goal of the season. Her teammates, #8 sophomore Berkley Hoff and #21 junior Sarah Stauber, assisted Thorson in the play.
Before the end of the period, Duluth managed to put one in the net. However, it would be both their first and last goal of the night. Thorson was back in action 44 seconds into the second period, scoring an even-strength goal with Hoff once again assisting, alongside #3 sophomore Reagon Hogenson. A few minutes later, Stauber scored with an assist from freshman #4 Hallie Komarek.
About halfway through the third period, #9 sophomore Reese Costley scored an even-strength goal, with assists from #18 senior Addison Bentler and #10 sophomore Hayden Bright. If Costley’s goal didn’t seal the deal, Hogenson’s unassisted goal at 16:41 certainly did. The game concluded with a decisive 5-1 victory.
On November 14th, the Storm traveled south to play Moose Lake/Willow River. Despite Hoff scoring a goal with assistance from Thorson and Bright, the team narrowly lost in overtime.
By the time this issue publishes, the girls will have taken on Hibbing at the Sonju Arena on the 19th. The North Shore Storm boys’ hockey games will begin earlier that same day at a Jamboree in Coleraine.
Good luck to both Storm teams this season!
